Smt. SriMohana Balasubramaniam
Smt. Srimohana Balasubramaniam, the visionary behind Nadanalaya Dance Academy, is dedicated to fostering excellence in Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form of India. Her journey commenced at the age of four, steeped in the Kalakshetra tradition under the tutelage of Smt. Devaki Kulothunga Bharathi. She has honed her skills under esteemed mentors such as Prof. Krishanthy Ravendra, Smt. Padmini Selvendrakumar, and Smt. Shanthini Sivanesan from India and Sri Lanka, as well as Shri Janathan and Smt. Nirmala from Kalakshetra.
Graduating as the top performer in the Fine Arts department at Jaffna University, Sri Lanka, she earned accolades like 'Performer of the Year' before obtaining her Master's degree from Bharathidasan University, India. Her academic pursuits led her to delve into Movement Therapy for children with special needs under the guidance of Prof. Daya Somasundaram and Dr. Shivayogan at the University Hospital of Jaffna.
Upon relocating to the USA, she founded her dance academy in 2009, tirelessly promoting Indian classical dance in Denver, Colorado, renowned for her inventive productions. An accomplished writer, she mesmerizes audiences with her compositions, choreography, and performances in theatrical productions like "Thalaivanai Thedi" and "Mazhai."
Smt. Mohana's artistic repertoire extends beyond dance, having spent seven years mastering theater under Professor Kuzhanthai Shanmugalingam, with notable performances like "Koor" garnering widespread acclaim. She collaborates with luminaries like Prof. Panruti Suresh in composing dance pieces and songs.
Continuing her quest for knowledge, she delves into the nuances of theater expression with "Navarasa Sathanam" under the mentorship of Professor Velu ji, Kerala. Beyond her artistic pursuits, she actively supports Special Needs schools through her nonprofit organization, Swayam, and serves as the Principle of Griffin College London (US Chapter) and as a member of the Alagappa University Performing Art Center. As a respected jury member and examiner, she contributes to various dance competitions and educational institutions, embodying rare artistry and compassion.
